Longtermism Defines Good Furniture Designs

The Oceanic is crafted entirely from post-consumer recycled plastic, including materials salvaged from the oceans through the SEAQUAL Initiative, which unites communities to combat marine debris.

We define GRADO's long-termism as sustainability and quality. Furniture deserves to be one’s life-long companion since the furniture industry is such a slow fashion. Whether an idea or a sketch, whether a piece of fabric or foam, whether an office chair or a sofa group: GRADO insists on the cradle-to-cradle principle by applying sustainable materials, keeps on polishing all the details for developing environmentalist furniture design and planning a sustainable future of humankind. Here we are introducing you to 3 brilliant efforts GRADO has made on pushing the boundaries of environmentalist furniture design:

Oceanic Collection from Camira: Eco-conscious Textiles

Each year, 12 million tonnes of plastic enters our oceans; equating to a truckload every single minute. The problem is growing at a rate beyond our ability to conceive, with experts predicting that by 2048 the amount of plastic in the seas will weigh more than the number of fish. The issue is a manmade disaster, threatening one of our most crucial life sources with every passing day. Reusing and recycling items are very basic solutions while an upgraded one is going to be "upcycling", i.e. transforming materials like discarded plastic from environmental hazards to new and different useful products.

GRADO's latest selected Oceanic is a fabric born of the SEAQUAL Initiative designed to combat marine plastic pollution and achieve a waste-free environment. Through the SEAQUAL Initiative, individuals, organizations, and companies have come together in the fight against pollution to clean our oceans and raise awareness of the issues caused by marine plastic. With the help of fishermen and other volunteers, the SEAQUAL community works to collect marine debris from the ocean and beaches before the plastics can degrade and become micro-plastic pieces. The Oceanic lection is created entirely from post-consumer recycled plastic -- from debris floating discarded in our seas, used to make SEAQUAL yarn, to bottles thrown away and destined for landfill. One small drop in the mission to clean both the earth and its ocean, this contemporary fabric is a recycled polyester with a purpose. The following image illustrates how Camira is upcycling to produce the Oceanic fabric collection.

Taking its strength from the raw material from which it was originally created, Oceanic is a highly durable textile, tough enough for life not only on the seas but also on the seats it furnishes. Blending a soft fluidity with a high level of performance, it is ideal for inclusion in a wide range of modern interiors.

Carefully curated colors with a refined color selection of 16 colorways, Oceanic combines muted, neutral hues with soft pastels and deep bolds to provide a versatile palette that echoes the shades visible on nature’s shoreline, as well as introducing a number of vibrant, trend-led tones. By using and recommending to our clients the OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified Oceanic textile collection made from 100% post-consumer recycled polyester, we are doing our best to take that responsibility for the future of human beings and the planet.

Felty Box: made of recycled PET felt

Felty Box the desk organizer is our new attempt on environment-friendly product. Our designer has endeavored to select this very special felt made from recycled PET material. PET, or polyethylene terephthalate, is basically recycled from plastic bottles, polyester fiber, covers of electronic products, etc.

We are proud to declare that every twenty-five plastic bottles can be made into one GRADO's Felty Box. Felty's package was designed to serve as an organizer for daily storage. This desk organizer design is of course environmentalist's choice. To choose Felty Box is to choose an environment-protecting lifestyle, following the idea of 3R —— Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle".

FSC® certified wood

The Forest Stewardship Council A. C. (FSC) is an international non-profit, multistakeholder organization established in 1993 that promotes responsible management of the world's forests via timber certification. The FSC's stated mission is to "promote environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable management of the world's forests". GRADO's collection is committed to sustainability and has been certified accordingly -- our use of responsibly sourced FSC® certified wood is dedicated to promoting socially responsible management of the world'ss forests.

Sustainability and Longtermism

Furniture design is a marvelous ballroom where so many loving pairs are dancing -- pencil and paper, metal and upholstery, artisan and machine, product and package. GRADO is the host who invites them to come and makes sure that all of them fully realize their potential and enjoy the romantic time. Our handpicked artisans are always ready to deliver their works to those who have enthusiasm for life. We define a “timeless design” as eternal beauty and built-to-last durability, as well as consideration on humans and nature. GRADO insists on using environmentally friendly materials, clean manufacturing, and sustainability. We make expressive designs to show our attitudes. We produce each piece with the assumption that it will get plenty of use. Artisanship makes quality. Artisanship makes longtermism.

GRADO aims to be a brand that understands social responsibility and puts it into practice. When we select timber for a sofa, when we offer help to a young lady'scareer when we develop a product made from recycled materials... Every detail of the furniture industry is relevant to the health of this planet. It's rather easy to promote the brand with slogans like "environmental protection" and "gender equality", but GRADO really starts with every detail in our business. Maybe there will be a day when GRADO's space solutions are not only for a specific area but for the globe.
